WORKSHOP: Traditional estonian tunes on small kannel
This workshop will focus on giving an overview of 6-12 stringed Estonian and Seto small kannels and introduce their historical and contemporary playing techniques. We’ll arrange instruments for loan, so everybody can learn some tunes. All tunes will be taught by listening only, you may bring your sound recording device with you.
Katrin is a kannel player and traditional singer from Estonia. She has studied traditional music and ethnomusicology at Tartu University and also in Latvia. In her Bachelor thesis Katrin studied kannel playing tradition in Setomaa (southwestern orthodox corner of Estonia) in the beginning of the 20th century. After graduating, Katrin has worked as traditional music teacher in various music schools, at several summer camps and festival courses. She is playing kannel in the trio Soon/Piho/Lepasson, whose album „Tempo di vals” was set up as a nominee for cd of the year at Estonian Folk Music Awards 2016.
